In the realm of Western architecture, a living room, known interchangeably as a lounge room, lounge, or sitting room, serves as a space within a residential dwelling or apartment designated for relaxation and social interaction. It may also be referred to as a front room if situated near the primary entrance of the dwelling. In grand formal residences, a sitting room often serves as a secluded living area adjacent to a bedroom, exemplified by prestigious spaces like the Queen’s Sitting Room and the Lincoln Sitting Room within the White House. The term “living room” emerged in the late 19th or early 20th century. A typical Western living room is outfitted with furnishings such as sofas, chairs, occasional tables, coffee tables, bookshelves, electric lamps, rugs, and various other pieces of furniture.
